About Us & Our History

In 1854, Joseph Hopson opened a furniture business on West Street, Newbury, which provided a delivery service to its customers’ homes, making it the original removals service. In 1886, just around the corner, Alfred Camp opened his Drapery Bazaar on Northbrook Street. These businesses ran separately until Paul Hopson, grandson of Joseph, married Norah Camp, daughter of Alfred, in 1920. The companies united to form Camp Hopson, comprising not only a removals service but also the hugely successful Camp Hopson department store, still thriving in Newbury to this day. This was followed by the Camp Hopson funeral directors, based at 90 West Street.

For the next 90 years, the Camp Hopson businesses remained in family hands, with an emphasis on maintaining a quality service for the people of Newbury and the surrounding areas.

In 2016, The Master Removers Group acquired the removals business to add to its existing portfolio of high-end firms. These include Anthony Ward-Thomas, London’s premier removal company.

Following the change of ownership, all staff were retained. The company continues to pride itself on being the highest quality, most dependable removals service in West Berkshire.

The Master Removers Group is an independent company predominantly owned by people who work in the business. We understand our success is driven by delivering an excellent service, meeting or surpassing customer expectations. Currently, there are eight businesses within the group, employing nearly 400 people, with national coverage via depots across the country. This allows us to keep our costs to a minimum. For example, when people are moving out of the local area, overnight and travelling costs can sometimes be reduced or avoided altogether. The group is financially robust and invests regularly in new vehicles to improve reliability and meet or even surpass environmental targets. The group has over 100 commercial vehicles of all shapes and sizes to meet all our customers’ needs. We have 12 warehouses nationwide, providing flexible and cost-effective storage solutions.

We are members of BAR ( British Association of Removers). This means we must meet an array of quality criteria, maintaining the highest standards of care for your property when we pack it up and transport its contents. Of all the quotations you get, we may not be the cheapest, but there’s a good reason for that; the standards and level of service we provide. Your move will be handled with the highest quality and the most excellent value – and we care for your possessions as if they were our own.

We also own and operate offices in Dorchester, Dorset under the name of Woods Removals, and have a large storage facility to accommodate your furniture and effects.
